Here is Cafe Hon featured on the newest episode of Kitchen Nightmares. I have not seen it yet so I’m going to go watch Gordon Ramsay blow his gasket in Denise Whiting’s direction. Oh, I can’t wait.
Some long winded back story for you:
I used to live in a neighborhood of Baltimore called Hampden. I got knocked up three months after moving there and pretty much became a grouchy, agoraphobic recluse. All hopes of making the best of my new neighborhood were shattered. What was the point of being surrounded by all the bars I wanted to haunt when I couldn’t drink anymore? I shut down.
Anyway, I lived right down the street from Cafe Hon. My mom would always make us go there when she visited because she is a creature of habit and found the place cozy and inviting. I didn’t really care to patronize it. You see, Denise Whiting, the owner, has attracted some controversy in the last few years because she is a bit of an egotistical nutball and trademarked the word “Hon” (among other things). Mainly, I just don’t think the food is that great plus the whole vibe is overbearingly corny, imo.
I last ate there almost a year ago. I was passing through town with my mom and Rhys and of course my mom suggested we go there for lunch. After I got out all of my eye rolls and exasperated sighs, I obliged. Rhys ended up having an epic meltdown and one of the hostesses began following us around with a pair of pink mardi gras beads, dangling them in his face while exclaiming “WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOUR DAUGHTER??” It was a dreadful experience and that is officially the last time I dine at Cafe Effing Hon.
And now, to watch!
