Last night I watched Melancholia. I figured there would never be a truly good time to watch it, as I feel with most of Lars Von Trier films.
I’ve been somewhat gloomy lately so what’s a little more to wallow in? The whole movie is pretty much a metaphor for depression.
Kirsten Dunst’s character Justine is intolerable at times but unfortunately I’ve experienced lows nearly as bad and found parts of her character relatable. There is a scene where her sister is holding her limp, naked body while trying to get her to take a bath and the task is simply too exhausting. I’ve been in that state of near catatonia, where your body and mind shut down and even the smallest things seem like huge overwhelming hurdles.
Oh also, A+ cans, Kirsten. Damn.
As I think about it more, I think I loved it (in the sense that you can enjoy anything so bleak).
